-Artist Statement-
This solo exhibition explores Haruna Oikawa’s interpretation of “Vanitas.”
Known for capturing ambiguous emotions and inner landscapes, Oikawa turns her attention to the universal themes of life and death. Drawing on traditional Vanitas motifs such as flowers, butterflies, skulls, and candles, she reflects on the beauty and transience of life from her own perspective.
Even a flower that blooms in the same way can never be encountered in exactly the same moment twice. Oikawa captures both the beauty of such fleeting moments and the quiet melancholy of their passing in glass, presenting them as deliberately ambiguous images that invite us to reconsider the act of seeing itself.
Through these works, the exhibition encourages viewers to reflect on their own lives, the passage of time, and those they hold dear and to quietly recognize the beauty and poignancy of being alive in this very moment.
-Artist Profile-
Born in Miyagi, Japan. Oikawa graduated from the Department of Crafts, specializing in Metal Casting, at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2018, and completed her MFA in Glass at the Graduate School of Fine Arts in Tokyo University of the Arts, in 2020.
Her practice explores the unique qualities of glass - its transparency, reflection, and shifting appearance depending on the viewer’s perspective - creating sculptural works that extend beyond conventional function. Through exhibitions, she continues to investigate visual ambiguity and shifts in perception, questioning the relationship between material and the act of seeing.
In her mosaic glass works, glass functions as a filter that deliberately blurs focus. Through this visual ambiguity, she explores the risks of perceiving things only at the surface, the distance between idealized memories and reality, as well as themes of “invisible walls” and “uncertain memories.”
In recent years, Oikawa has expanded her practice through a range of collaborations, including creating artwork for singer-songwriter milet’s album and producing artworks for window displays at LUMINE locations.
